An Inheritance

What is it like in 2125? Is it full of people? Does it get busy? I was asking because right now it is chaos. Do you still have lizards? Do you want my favourite recipe to make for dinner? I can show you. Here.

Developed over 18 months with more than 450 young people from across Greater Manchester, An Inheritance is a gift from the children of today for the children of 2125.

Showing at Manchester Art Gallery in 2025 and again in one hundred years’ time, An Inheritance consists of precious objects, important knowledge, and a collectively written letter to the children of the future. Members of the public are invited to contribute as well, adding their own knowledge to an individually numbered postcard that they are asked to care for over the next one hundred years, bringing it back to the gallery when the exhibition is restaged for its intended recipients.

Taking place alongside the exhibition is a special ceremony designed by our young artists, where key representatives sign an oath written by the children, promising to safeguard the collection for the next hundred years.

An extended tribute to the city’s youngest inhabitants, An Inheritance is an invitation to think about the world we live in now, the legacy we leave behind and what it means to be a good ancestor.
